The City Council voted last week to increase validation fees for the downtown parking structure from 25 to 50 cents to make it financially self-sufficient.
Community Services Director Ron Hagan had suggested keeping the fee, charged to retailers and others who provide validation, at 25 cents for the first hour, then charging the regular hourly parking rate minus a $2 discount to gain more revenue from those who park longer. But council members disagreed.
“It seems to me that 25 cents is low,” Councilman Tom Harman said. “We’ve been dipping into the general fund for years to pay for this.”
