DIVINELY CHALLENGED

Pamela Douglas’ article on USC writing grads struck a nerve with me (“Postgraduate Work: First Get Real,” Feb. 8).
Graduate Julia Rosen’s comment that “ ‘NYPD Blue’ and ‘ER’ challenge people in ways people who watch shows like ‘Touched by an Angel’ wouldn’t want to be challenged” suggests three things: One, that the viewers of shows such as “ER” and “Touched by an Angel” do not overlap; two, that “Touched by an Angel” is not challenging; and three, that those who watch “Touched by an Angel” do not want to be challenged in their television viewing.
Wrong on all points.
I am a loyal viewer of “ER,” “Homicide,” “Law & Order” and “Touched by an Angel.” The former shows challenge me in areas of medical and legal ethics, race, justice and truth. The latter challenges me in my relationship with God and issues of faith. None of these shows--especially “Touched by an Angel,” as Rosen suggests--tackles simple issues. At least, I would not describe rape, spousal abuse, homelessness or alcoholism as simple issues.
Perhaps “Touched by an Angel” is perceived as less challenging because it offers a simple solution. At least it offers one.
