Council Approves Urgency Ordinance on Group Care Home Limits

Group care homes must be at least 1,500 feet apart under an urgency ordinance passed by the City Council on Monday.
Passed unanimously, the ordinance takes effect immediately.
With a large number of private residences in Aegean Hills being used for elder care, the city had been looking into how to regulate the local industry.
After a conditional-use permit was issued for another group home recently, city officials decided that an urgency ordinance was needed because of the proliferation of such businesses in residential neighborhoods. Some residents have complained about traffic and parking.
Previously, group homes needed to be separated only by 300 feet.
The recent activity “makes me believe we needed to look at making the distance more than 300 feet,” Mayor Susan Withrow said.
