Chicago Retiree Wins Presidency

A Chicago retiree captured the presidency, narrowly winning a runoff election less than a year after returning to the homeland he fled more than half a century ago. Valdas Adamkus, a 71-year-old former administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, beat former prosecutor general Arturas Paulauskas, 44, by less than 1 percentage point in Sunday’s runoff. Final results showed that Adamkus won 49.9% of the vote to Paulauskas’ 49.3%, with the remainder of the ballots spoiled or unmarked.
