Corona del Mar has been named national champion in girls’ tennis by USA Today. The Sea Kings, which won the Southern Section Division I title in December, were ranked No. 1 in a poll of coaches from eight regions across the country. The poll of Jan. 8 was based on strength of schedule, record and national rankings of individual players.
Corona del Mar Coach Tim Mang said his players were ecstatic when they learned of the ranking.
“They’re still trying to get over being CIF champs,” he said. “This is fantastic.”
Bradenton (Fla.) Academy was ranked second, Del Mar Torrey Pines seventh and Palos Verdes Peninsula, whom Corona del Mar beat in the Division I final, was 13th.
