City Considers a Change in Animal Control Services

In an attempt to close the budget gap that forced the city to lay off one-fourth of its staff this month, Hawthorne city officials may cancel a contract with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and sign a deal with the county Department of Animal Care and Control to provide animal-related services.
Mayor Larry Guidi said the City Council is scheduled to review a county proposal Monday that would save the city more than $100,000 annually. The city currently spends $324,000 under its arrangement with the SPCA to handle animal control, licensing and vaccinations.
In addition, the city is considering contracting with its neighbor, Lawndale, for animal care and control. Lawndale recently established a department to handle those services.
