Town Mourns Teens Killed in Avalanche

In Montigny-le-Bretonneux, just outside Paris, red candles burned at a makeshift altar inside the high school and sobbing students clung to each other, devastated by nine classmates’ deaths in an Alpine avalanche. Police said Friday’s accident would have been averted if the group’s instructors had heeded weather warnings. Eleven people died after a wall of snow swept away 34 students and six instructors.
