Statue of Liberty Crown Trips Cut
Visitors who want to climb to the Statue of Liberty’s crown this summer will have to catch the first available ferries, at 8:30 a.m., from Battery Park in New York or Liberty State Park in Jersey City--or forget it. From June 29 through Sept. 7, only passengers on those ferries will be allowed to make the 354-step climb. The National Park Service said the summer-only rules are designed to reduce three-hour waits in line and medical evacuations of tourists who can’t take the heat of an afternoon climb; last summer, 160 people were treated for such problems. The ferry schedule also has been expanded to handle more visitors. Information: tel. (212) 363-7620.
