‘Outdoor Classroom Project’ Begins

Westwood Charter School celebrated the completion of the first phase of its “Outdoor Classroom Project,” which creates open-air learning areas at the elementary school.
The first step of the project divided an asphalt playground into 12 patios separated by trees, shrubs and a fence. Each “outdoor classroom” is contiguous to a bungalow classroom used by 240 first- and second-graders.
The patios measure 20 by 40 feet each and are equipped with tables and benches.
“It’s a natural for art, writing, reading, science experiments,” said Principal Michelle Bennett.
The project was funded by a $25,000 grant from the Ann and Kirk Douglas Foundation and a $23,186 grant from the Los Angeles Unified School District, Bennet said.
