Pasadena Council Picks Acting City Manager

Pasadena officials Friday appointed Assistant City Manager Cynthia Kurtz as acting city manager, a day after the municipality’s top administrator gave up a three-month fight for his job.
In closed session, the City Council voted unanimously to temporarily promote Kurtz to the job vacated by outgoing City Manager Philip Hawkey. “I am pleased that the council--all seven of them--had the confidence to have me fill in,” Kurtz said after the decision.
The appointment is effective Monday, and Kurtz is expected to hold the position for at least nine months during the search for a permanent replacement. She is expected to be among the candidates.
Kurtz, 46, has also been the city’s public works director.
