STANTON — Six adults and three children were displaced from their apartments early Saturday after a fire that began in the kitchen gutted the units.
Food was left cooking unattended on the stove in the bottom unit of an apartment complex in the 8300 block of Chapman Avenue, said County Fire Capt. Scott Brown. The occupants were awakened by a smoke detector, Brown said. Firefighters were called at 1:40 a.m. The fire was under control in less than 20 minutes.
“What saved this family’s life was the activation of the smoke detector,” Brown said. “Without it, there would have been at least one fatality.”
