Prop. 10
* I told several people at my office that I, a pack-a-day smoker for 25 years, had voted in favor of Proposition 10, the tobacco surtax. They looked at me as if I were an escaped mental patient from another galaxy. Why, they asked, would anyone vote to raise his own taxes? I explained that I’m capable of voting against my own short-term interests in favor of the overall public good. This was met with nervous blank stares and an abrupt change of conversational topic.
Then I remembered: I was the only registered Democrat in the room.
