Borchard’s Play Lifts Rio Mesa

No. 1 player Quinn Borchard surrendered only one game while beating three opponents to help the Rio Mesa High boys’ tennis team to a 14-4 victory over perennial Channel League power Santa Barbara in a nonleague match Monday at Rio Mesa.
Borchard beat No. 1 player Andrew Lyon and No. 3 Ryan Moxley by 6-0 scores, and he defeated No. 2 Justin Bagby, 6-1.
Rio Mesa (8-1), which won all nine singles sets, also got a strong performance from Khai Nguyen, who usually plays doubles. He played at No. 3 singles in place of freshman Adrian Mardyks, who is in Florida competing in the Easter Bowl Junior Championships. Nguyen won his three sets, 6-0, 6-4, 6-1.
The Spartans won five of nine doubles sets, with the No. 1 team of Chris Worthington and Josh Bautista winning two of three. They beat Will Powers and John McManigal, 6-3, and T.J. Gamble and Brad Defnet, 6-2.
In other boys’ tennis matches:
Camarillo 15, Royal 3--Mike Mancini and Andrew Gold each went 3-0 in singles play to help the Scorpions (9-4) to victory in a nonleague match at Camarillo.
Mancini, the Scorpions’ No. 1 player, won his matches by 6-0 scores, with No. 2 Gold winning by scores of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1.
Quoc Ly and Justin Tong, Camarillo’s No. 2 doubles team, won their matches by scores of 6-4, 6-1 and 6-3.
Chatsworth 5, San Fernando 2--Steve Chavez won, 6-4, at No. 1 singles and Sergio Gonzalez posted a 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles, but San Fernando (2-5, 0-4 in conference play) fell to Chatsworth (4-1, 2-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at El Cariso Park in Sylmar.
BOYS’ GOLF
Tehachapi tournament--Camilo Landinez shot a two-over-par 74 to help Chaminade to a runner-up finish behind Porterville Monache at Stallion Springs Golf Course.
John Kim’s 77 helped Chaminade to a 238 total, nine shots back of Monache.
Granada Hills 414, Birmingham 424--Jonathan Huppert shot an eight-over par 80 to help the Highlanders (9-2, 9-0) to victory in a City 6-A League match at Knollwood Country Club in Granada Hills.
Keith Romar of Birmingham took medalist honors with a 78.
Simi Valley 403, Agoura 436--Mark Modglin was medalist with an eight-over-par 79 for Simi Valley (9-0) in a nonleague match at Simi Hills Golf Course.
Brent Flickinger led Agoura (5-6) with an 84.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Antelope Valley 12, Citrus 7--Kristi DiMarco had a double and a triple for Antelope Valley in a Foothill Conference game at Marie Kerr Park in Lancaster.
DiMarco had one of six doubles for Antelope Valley (20-11-1, 5-1). Tashie Aguinaga was four for four with two runs batted in.
