Campaign Funds

Your Feb. 4 front-page article, “Governor Race Set Spending Record,” was enlightening. The $118 million spent on the campaign and the millions spent on those impossible-to-decipher propositions are a waste of money.
When I saw the article’s accompanying information box and its subheading, “What $118 million will buy,” I assumed the researchers would offer some perspective. Instead, I was horrified to see the trite comparisons: a seven-year contract for Shaquille O’Neal; the cost of producing “Lethal Weapon 4”; or the 1997 Dodgers and Angels payrolls.
How about some real issues? The $118 million would buy a yearlong stay in a nursing home for 2,700 people; a year’s worth of rent in a two-bedroom apartment for 13,129 Los Angeles households; a gallon of milk for every person in California; a used car for every household in Culver City; or one or two weeks of groceries for every person in the city of Los Angeles. Perspective please!
