OUTLOOK: There are 11 freshmen on the roster, including guard Brady Chelette, the coach’s son. Forwards Jeronne Saxton and Norman Floyd, both 6-7, are the only returnees. Saxton averaged 13.2 points, Floyd 3.2. The Marauders are chasing their sixth consecutive conference or divisional title.

Canyons
COACH: Lee Smelser, 31st season
LAST SEASON: 19-15; fifth in WSC Southern Division at 4-6
OUTLOOK: Not much depth to complement 6-4 forward Anthony Ellison and 6-foot guard Eurskine Robinson. Ellison averaged 18.1 points and 7.2 rebounds last season, Robinson averaged 10.0 points and 6.2 assists. The Cougars have eight freshmen, including 6-6 forward Nana Gbewonyo, who averaged 23.0 points at Kennedy, and guard Michael Goldman, who averaged 17.6 points and 7.4 assists at Calabasas.
OPENER: Friday at Santa Ana, 7 p.m.
Glendale
COACH: Brian Beauchemin, 21st season
LAST SEASON: 24-10; tied for second in WSC Southern at 6-4
OUTLOOK: The Vaqueros lost the bulk of a talented team to eligibility, as in two seasons and you have to move on, so Beauchemin is hoping the new crop can keep Glendale competitive. Newcomers include transfers Matt Moore, a 6-6 center from Loyola Marymount; Mike Mason, a 6-4 forward from Citrus and Rocky Steryo, a 6-1 guard from Menlo College who played at Montclair Prep.
OPENER: Friday vs. Oxnard at Victor Valley tournament, 2 p.m.
Moorpark
COACH: Remy McCarthy, fourth season
LAST SEASON: 12-16; fourth in WSC Northern at 3-5
OUTLOOK: Guards Alan Case (6-4) and O.J. Thomas (5-10) are the torch bearers for the Raiders. Case was second on the team in scoring at 13.5 points per game and Thomas led the WSC with 201 assists. The Raiders shoot from anywhere in their ZIP Code. They took 708 three-point shots, second-most in the conference. Guard Joey Willrodt tried a conference-high 209 three-point shots and Case took 168. Dan Galvanoni, a 6-3 transfer from Nevada, is a skilled point guard.
OPENER: Friday vs. Pasadena at Cerro Coso tournament, 6 p.m.
Oxnard
COACH: Ron McClurkin, seventh season
LAST SEASON: 9-19; fifth in WSC Northern at 0-8
OUTLOOK: The Condors have grounds for optimism. They have seven sophomores, including 6-5 forward Tellys Knight, the team’s top scorer (15.1 points per game) and rebounder (10.6) last season. Guard Omar McCarter averaged 14.7 points and forward Chris Carter averaged 9.8 points and 6.2 rebounds. The Condors are redefining the term “community college.” Nine of the 13 players are from other states.
OPENER: Friday vs. Glendale at Victor Valley tournament, 2 p.m.
Valley
COACH: Doug Michelson, seventh season
LAST SEASON: 20-14; tied for second in WSC Southern at 6-4
OUTLOOK: The Monarchs lost their top two scorers, so 6-8 sophomore forward Jerrohn Jordan and probably 6-5 freshman forward Eskias McDaniels have to pick up the slack. Jordan averaged 9.6 points and 5.5 rebounds. McDaniels averaged 21.4 points at Valencia last season. Playmaker Joe Bakhoum is among the best in the WSC. He tied for second in the conference in assists with 198.
OPENER: Friday vs. Fullerton at Mt. SAC tournament, 6 p.m.
Ventura
COACH: Greg Winslow, first season
LAST SEASON: Did not field a team
OUTLOOK: The Pirates have size, muscle . . . and age. Several players are in the 23- to 25-year-old range, and 7-foot center Dave Wiggins is 27. The muscle comes from Wiggins (295 pounds), redshirt football player Cortez Swanigan (6-4, 230) and forward Kenny Barnes (6-6, 240). Winslow said Swanigan can play all the positions. Forward Desmond Penigar (6-7) is expected to produce on the front line.
OPENER: Saturday at El Camino, 7 p.m.
