Mayor Ruby L. Netzley lost a battle with her City Council colleagues over city funds for four nonprofit organizations, including the Orange County Marine Institute.
Netzley asked the council earlier this week to allocate $4,500 from the city’s service enhancement fund to groups that she feels are vital to the community.
The council opted instead to give the groups $3,000 from a different part of the city budget intended specifically to help local nonprofit agencies.
Netzley was visibly displeased with the council’s lack of support for her request.
“This is totally wrong,” she said. “I cannot understand this council, and I cannot understand how people who work for these organizations can quibble over $1,500.”
