Militants in Chechnya
* Your Nov. 18 editorial, “West Should Push on Chechnya,” is completely off base. Russia is currently involved in an armed conflict with Islamic militants in Chechnya. Many of these militants are followers of Wahhabism--a radical, anti-Western form of Islam practiced by the repressive Taliban regime in Afghanistan and by terrorist Osama bin Laden.
A number of Afghani moujahedeen “volunteers,” financed by Saudi petrodollars, are fighting alongside the Chechen guerrillas. Rather than confront Russia over its internal conflict in Chechnya, the United States should aid Russia in its war against terrorism and its efforts to curb the spread of radical Islam in the Caucasus.

* The empire is gone, the evil remains. The West should push on Chechnya.
