Gospel music icons Andrae and Sandra Crouch spent the day Friday preparing to distribute 40 tons of nonperishable food at a two-day block party that ends tonight.
The event, co-sponsored by Help Heal Our Streets Inc. and the city Department of Cultural Affairs, runs from noon to 11 p.m. in front of the New Christ Memorial Church of God in Christ, 13333 Vaughn St.
Food will be distributed to needy individuals, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, senior citizens programs and other community groups, organizers said. Some 10,000 families are expected to attend the event.
The party will feature a marketplace, carnival rides and live performances by the Grammy Award-winning Crouch siblings, Tata Vega, the New Christ Memorial gospel choir, mariachi bands, comedians and others.
“We have traveled all over the world and it means a lot to come home, share our resources and show the people here that we really care,” said Sandra Crouch, who is co-pastor of the church with her twin brother.
