Sonora Gets Lead, Rolls Over Century

David Mayfield ran for three touchdowns Friday to lead Sonora to a 37-16 nonleague victory over Century at La Habra High.

Mayfield ran for 92 yards in 14 carries and caught three passes for 46 yards.

He started the scoring for the Raiders, capping a 64-yard drive with a seven-yard run with 6 minutes 7 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Nick Ross added a 36-yard field goal about four minutes later to extend Sonora’s lead.

The Raiders, who rushed for 228 yards, then scored consecutive rushing touchdowns. Ross scored on a 13-yard run, capping a 59-yard drive, and Mayfield got his second score on a four-yard run with 4:19 remaining in the second quarter to make it 23-0.

Century running back Fortino Rivera rushed for 97 yards and two touchdowns in 22 carries.

Rivera scored his first touchdown from 10 yards as the second quarter ended. He also ran for the two-point conversion to make it 23-8.

Rivera’s touchdown was set up by an interception by Joe Mijares, who caught the ball at the Century 15 and returned it 55 yards.

Sonora’s Josh Gonzalez scored on a one-yard run in the third quarter and Mayfield scored on a six-yard run in the fourth to make it 37-8.
