Pio Pico Elementary School’s mentor reading program got a $90,000 boost Monday from Bank of America. The HOSTS (Helping One Student To Succeed) pilot program at Pio Pico helps students who are reading below their grade level by providing them with one-on-one tutoring each week.
About 90% of the 280 students in the program at Pio Pico increased their reading skills by at least one grade level last year. The new funds will be used to increase the already large pool of volunteer mentors and to help expand the program to neighboring elementary schools. To volunteer: (714) 543-3148.
