One grant, for $68,939, will provide professional development in reading instruction for teachers of grades four through six, aimed at helping students who need the most help with reading comprehension.

The other grant, for $19,400, will be used to train new teachers of kindergarten through third grade in reading strategies.

“We’re very happy to have them,” Janet Steger, the district’s coordinator of curriculum and staff development, said of the grants. “It gives us the opportunity to provide training that otherwise we couldn’t afford.”

The grants were awarded by the California Department of Education for the 1999-2000 school year.
