Hundreds of students at Erwin Street Elementary School will benefit from Los Angeles school board member Caprice Young giving birth to a baby girl Saturday.
To honor the birth of Roxanne Sonnet Dierking, Young said she will start a book drive to help two schools in her district--Erwin and West Hollywood Elementary School.
Young delivered the healthy baby--at 7 pounds, 4.6 ounces--at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Hollywood at 10:35 p.m. Saturday. She and her husband, Mark Dierking, also have a 3-year-old daughter, Alexandra.
“My family has always been blessed with a love of reading and lots of books,” Young said in a statement. “On this joyous occasion, I would like to celebrate with a gift to our schools.”
BookEnds, a local nonprofit literacy group that is coordinating the effort, identified the two schools as needing books.
Anyone wishing to donate books may call BookEnds at (818) 716-1198 or Young’s office at (213) 625-6386.
