Santa Paula Police Contract
It is time for the Santa Paula City Council to settle the labor dispute with our local police.
During our 26 years here, my wife and I have had little contact with the police but we know them to be professional and responsible. We seldom need them because they are there for us every day. You can bet that we would really need them if they were not so readily available.
Santa Paula officers deserve special appreciation for the way they defuse many a volatile situations and for their sensitivity to the mentally ill. These officers deserve every dime they are seeking and more. They do not deserve the negative comments that have been directed toward them during this period of negotiations.
The $34,000 that our police are seeking seems so small and reasonable. We have been told that the city has contractual obligations to other employees tied to police salaries. Let’s hope not. If so, there is reason to ask why.
It is in the best interest of all to settle this matter without further delay. There are hundreds of places to find $34,000 in a city budget. Just do it. And don’t even think about threatening us with a loss of service to our seniors or youth.
