* Re “Council Votes to Review Ties With Boy Scouts,” Nov. 29:
For better or worse, the Supreme Court has concluded that the Boy Scouts have a constitutional right, under the 1st Amendment, to teach that homosexual conduct is not “morally straight” and to refuse to promote homosexual conduct as a legitimate form of behavior.
Federal and state laws allow individuals to sue for damages and other relief for actual or attempted interference with the exercise or enjoyment of their constitutional rights.
The Los Angeles City Council has recently voted to enter into a consent decree with the Justice Department, aimed at correcting civil rights violations by the city. It has also voted to spend millions of taxpayer dollars to settle lawsuits filed by individuals whose rights were allegedly violated.
Now, the council wants to terminate the city’s relationships with the Boy Scouts, based on the Scouts’ exercise of their rights. Don’t these people ever learn?
