Moldova’s Leader to Dissolve Parliament; Early Elections Set

CHISINAU, Moldova — President Petru Lucinschi said Wednesday that he will dissolve Parliament next month and set early elections for Feb. 25 to end a deadlock over who should succeed him.
“Parliament will be dissolved after [Orthodox] Christmas holidays, after Jan. 8. An early election will be held on the last Sunday of February,” Lucinschi told a news conference.
The announcement followed the Constitutional Court’s ruling Tuesday that Lucinschi had the right to dismiss Parliament after lawmakers last week failed for the fourth time to pick a new president.
The vote failed to take place last Thursday after the center-right majority held a boycott to prevent the appointment of a Communist candidate. The court ruled that the boycott was unjustified.
Right-wing and centrist pro-reform deputies said last week that they prefer early elections to having a Communist for president.
