A Mission Viejo teenager led sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase before crashing on the Santa Ana Freeway, authorities said Friday.
The boy was not injured, they said.
The pursuit began in Mission Viejo shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday when deputies saw the 15-year-old, a reported runaway, driving his parents’ car, said Sgt. Bob Wren of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies followed him as he got on northbound Interstate 5 at Crown Valley Parkway. The chase reached speeds of up to 100 mph, Wren said.
At the 17th Street exit in Santa Ana, officers from the California Highway Patrol took over the chase, following the boy until he crashed into the center divider on the Santa Ana Freeway near the Katella Avenue exit in Anaheim, said CHP Officer Michelle DiMaggio.
The boy was taken to a county mental health facility, Wren said.
