Herrington Chosen State Coach of Year

Mike Herrington of Hart High has been selected state football coach of the year by Cal-Hi Sports.
Herrington guided Hart to a 14-0 record and the Southern Section Division III championship. The Indians have won 23 consecutive games and nine consecutive Foothill League championships.
BASEBALL
* Hart High will conduct a weekly baseball coaches’ clinic for five consecutive Monday nights in the school cafeteria starting Monday.
Coaches Frank Sanchez of Pepperdine and Chris Zavatsky of Glendale College will be the first guest speakers, followed by Coach Mike Gillespie of USC on Jan. 17, the Hart coaching staff on Jan. 24, Coaches Len Mohney of College of the Canyons and Mike Sims of Duarte High on Jan. 31 and former Hart Coach Bud Murray on Feb. 7.
The clinics begin at 7 p.m. Cost is $10, or $40 for five sessions.
* Outfielder Jason Kubel of Highland plans to commit to Long Beach State, according to Coach Mike Van Cheri. Bulldog pitcher Matt Parris has already signed with UC Santa Barbara.
VOLLEYBALL
* Dave Clark has resigned as boys’ volleyball coach at Notre Dame High and the school is seeking a replacement.
SOFTBALL
* The Ballistic 14-and-under travel softball team will hold open tryouts Saturday. Information: Greg Westerhouse, (805) 377-1512.
