Weather in Perspective

Re “County Braces for Big Storm,” Jan. 25.
I enjoy your ads that are shown in the movie theaters. Your latest one, the spoof on the network news story of the gopher hole, is very funny. It illustrates how news has become sensationalized.
However, this article in the Ventura County section exaggerated the mild rain showers that we experienced. The article reported that a half-inch of rain was expected in the coastal areas, where most of the population resides.
A more appropriate headline would have been “County Braces for First Rainfall.” The definition of storm is “a violent disturbance of the atmosphere attended by wind and usually rain, snow, hail, sleet or thunder and lightning.” The key word here is violent.
Please keep your newspaper accurate and refrain from sensationalizing the weather.
