State School Board Votes to Oppose Vouchers

SACRAMENTO — The state school board voted Thursday to oppose the voucher initiative and support the local school bond initiative on the November ballot.
Both votes were unanimous.
The voucher initiative, Proposition 38, would allow parents $4,000 per pupil in state money to pay for private schooling.
Board members said the initiative would undermine all public school reform efforts the state has been working on for the past few years.
The school bond initiative, Proposition 39, would allow local school districts to get approval of bonds for construction projects with 55% of the vote instead of two-thirds.
Voters in March narrowly rejected a similar initiative, Proposition 26, which would have allowed local school bond approval with a simple majority vote. --Associated Press
