Russia defeated the U.S. women’s water polo team, 6-5, in an exhibition Thursday at the Los Alamitos Armed Forces Center.
The U.S., coming off a sweep of the entire Olympic field at the Holiday Cup in Los Alamitos last week, took a 2-0 lead after the first quarter on goals by Brenda Villa and “Gubba” Sheehy. But Russia scored four consecutive goals over the next two quarters and withstood two late goals by the U.S. to hold on for the victory.
The U.S. will meet the Russians again today at Stanford.
