LA HABRA

Two new code enforcement officers will hit the streets this year, and the city’s police officers will spend less time writing out reports, thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The City Council voted Monday to use $116,300 from a Local Law Enforcement Block Grant to hire more code enforcement officers and pay for transcription services for police reports. The grant was made up of $105,727 from the Bureau of Justice Assistance and $10,573 in city funds.

Code enforcement officers are part of the city’s community police force and canvass La Habra streets looking for sign violations, piles of debris or trash and other infractions that may not require a criminal investigation but are a nuisance to residents.
