DANA POINT

Several pods of California gray whales made quite a splash when the Festival of Whales kicked off in Dana Point Harbor.
Organizers say about 5,000 people turned out to take part in family activities last weekend and hear live music at a number of stages around the harbor.
The whale festival shifts into high gear this weekend with lectures, demonstrations and exhibits of the large sea mammals that travel past Dana Point each year.
Activities take place at various locations in the harbor area including the Dana Point Ocean Institute, 24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive, (949) 496-2274; and Doheny State Beach, 34320 Del Obispo St., (949) 496-6172.
