Most spring sports began play earlier this week, but the high school baseball and softball seasons start today with a number of major tournaments.
The Loara tournament features seven of Orange County’s top 10 baseball teams. The 32-team tournament, with games held throughout the county, concludes March 11.
The ranked teams participating are No. 1 Fountain Valley, No. 3 El Dorado, No. 5 Villa Park, No. 6 Santa Margarita, No. 7 Los Alamitos, No. 8 Loara and No. 9 Cypress.
The Foothill tournament, which also begins today, features two 12-team brackets, each of which will decide a champion on March 11. Tenth-ranked Capistrano Valley plays at fourth-ranked Esperanza and Foothill plays at second-ranked Mater Dei in first-round games in the Newport Elks bracket. Nine other county teams compete in the Costa Mesa bracket.
La Quinta, a perennial power that returns no starters, begins its rebuilding project today against Riverside Poly in the North Orange County tournament. The Aztecs are one of 12 county teams in the draw.
La Habra, Santiago and Whittier Christian will play in the La Habra tournament, and Orange opens its season Saturday in the Montebello tournament.
