RESEDA — Despite lifesaving attempts by paramedics and a school nurse, a 13-year-old girl at the Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies died Tuesday afternoon after collapsing during the lunch period, school and city officials said.
The cause of death is unknown and an autopsy will be conducted on the eighth-grade student, said Shel Erlich, a spokesman with the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Officials did not release the girl’s name Tuesday night.
When city paramedics arrived at the school around 12:40 p.m., the student was unconscious and without a pulse, said Bob Collis, a spokesman with the Los Angeles Fire Department.
In front of a group of staff and students, Collis said, the nurse and two paramedics tried to revive the girl. Paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation as the girl was transported to Encino-Tarzana Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival. “No one knows why she was unconscious,” Collis said.
A crisis team will be at the school today to assist staff and students, LAUSD officials said.
