Guthridge to Stay With Team

North Carolina Coach Bill Guthridge, whose mother Betty died Wednesday after a long illness, said he will coach the Tar Heels in the NCAA South Regional this weekend before returning to Parsons, Kan., for funeral services Monday.
“It’s really a blessing, because she had been out of it for the past five or six years,” said Guthridge of his 96-year-old mother. “I wish it would have happened sooner, because she wouldn’t have wanted to live like that.”
If the Tar Heels lose to Tennessee in their regional semifinal game tonight, Guthridge, 62, will depart as soon as possible. If they win, he will coach Sunday’s regional final against the Miami-Tulsa winner before leaving for Kansas.
