Huntington Beach Basketball Coach to Take Season Off

Long-time Huntington Beach boys’ basketball Coach Roy Miller announced he will take next season off to spend more time with his family. James Dingus, an assistant, is expected to replace him.
A graduate of Huntington Beach, Miller has coached the Oilers for 23 seasons and has a record of 256-297. Huntington Beach won just seven games in the last two seasons and Miller said he would assess whether to return to coaching after the 2000-2001 season.
SOCCER
Santiago Canyon College, which will field its first men’s and women’s soccer teams this fall, named its coaches Friday.
Barry Turner, boys’ coach at Foothill High and for the Tustin Soccer Club the last 10 years, has been named men’s coach. Ian Woodhead, an assistant coach for the Cypress women’s team and the Lakewood Mayfair High girls’ team, has been named women’s coach.
MOTORSPORTS
The Shifter Kart Championship Series makes the first of five stops today and Sunday with racing at Edison Field.
Gates open at 7 a.m. for the series, which features go-kart style cars capable of reaching speeds of 115 mph on the 3/4-mile track. Adult admission is $10, seniors and children 12-and-under are $8, and kids under 5 are free.
