Hits Keep Coming for Fullerton in Victory Over Nevada

Cal State Fullerton’s offense remained hot Saturday, compiling 16 hits in an 11-2 Big West Conference victory over Nevada in Reno.
Chris Stringfellow had three hits, including a double, and three runs batted in for the Titans. Brett Kay had a single, a home run and three RBIs.
Fullerton, which led, 6-1, after three innings, scored four runs in the third and sixth innings.
Leadoff man David Bacani collected three hits, including a double, and drove in two runs for Fullerton (15-7, 5-0).
Starting pitcher Jon Smith (4-1) went 5 2/3 innings, allowing one run and seven hits, to pick up the victory.
The Titans will try to complete a series sweep against the Wolf Pack (18-10, 2-3) at noon today.
In another Big West Conference game:
Long Beach State 10, Pacific 4--The 49ers scored six runs in the top of the ninth. Robert Womack hit a double and a triple and Chris Wright had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Matt Paz (7-1) got the victory for Long Beach State (18-7, 6-2).
In the Concordia baseball tournament:
Concordia 13, Concordia (Wisc.) 3--Derek Patterson homered twice and broke two school records. Patterson became the Eagles’ all-time hits leader with 209. He also broke the season home run record with his 11th and 12th.
“I had a dream I would break the [hits] record with a home run,” Patterson said. “It’s been my goal to break the record since I came here as a freshman.”
Patterson finished with four RBIs and teammate Charles Chatman was three for three with a triple, home run and four RBIs.
In a later game, Chatman homered and drove in three runs as the Eagles defeated Concordia (Ill.), 4-3.
In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:
Biola 4-6, Vanguard 1-3--Kevin Mitchell tripled and Kevin Candelaria doubled for Vanguard in the second game. Adam Steckler had three hits in the doubleheader for the Lions (4-24, 2-16).
In Big West Conference softball:
Fullerton 10-6, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 6-0--Yasmin Mossadeghi hit two home runs in the opening game as the Titans (27-7, 5-0) collected 12 hits against three Mustang pitchers.
Gina Oaks (10-1) picked up the victory in relief for the Titans.
In the second game, Jodie Cox (11-2) pitched a two-hit shutout. The Titans got eight hits and scored two runs each in the third, fourth and sixth innings. Oaks had three hits, with a home run and three RBIs.
The teams will conclude their three-game series today at noon.
In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:
Hope International 0-2, Cal Baptist 2-1--In the second game of the doubleheader, Leslie Graves and Cori McDonald hit RBI doubles and Sarah Yarbrough threw out the tying run at the plate for Hope International (17-13, 6-6).
Pt. Loma Nazarene 6-2, Concordia 3-0--Concordia had eight hits and built a 3-0 lead in the first game, but Point Loma scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the victory.
At the UC Irvine track and field invitational:
Frichtel wins--UC Irvine senior Doug Frichtel came from 20 meters back on the final lap to win the 1,500 meters in 3:54.99.
Courtney Baird (3,000 meters), Anita Sampson (long jump) and Annmarie Turpin (high jump) all won their events for UCI.
Cornell won both the men’s and women’s team titles.
