Police Capt. Ross Rice will take over the department next week until a permanent replacement is found for retiring Chief Daryll Thomann.
City Administrator Robert D’Amato designated Rice to lead the department beginning April 3. He said Friday he’s not certain yet whether he will look outside the city for Placentia’s next police chief.
The City Charter gives the city administrator control over the hiring of the police chief. It’s a policy that has raised concerns among some City Council members, some of whom believe they should have more accountability in the process of hiring senior city staff.
