It’s time once again to take a running tour of Corona del Mar for the 19th annual Scenic 5K.
This year, race Chairman Jim Skahan is expecting 3,500 to 4,500 runners to show up the morning of June 3. Runners will follow the oceanfront bluffs and wind through residential areas.
There are separate 5K races for men and women, as well as a Kids’ Dolphin Dash and a 2-mile Fun Walk. Prizes will be handed out after the final event.
After the event, which lasts until midmorning, runners will be served a breakfast catered by restaurants in Newport Beach, including El Ranchito, Five Crowns and Tommy Bahamas.
Nearly two decades ago, the Corona del Mar Chamber of Commerce came up with the idea for the race as a means of raising money for the community.
Half the money will go to the Chamber of Commerce for the beautification of Corona del Mar, Skahan said, and the rest will be given to the city for recreation programs.
Entry fees range from $12 to $20 per race in advance and are all $25 the day of the event. Registration the day of the race begins at 6:30 a.m. Runners will meet at the intersection of Ocean Boulevard and Heliotrope Avenue, just above the Corona del Mar State Beach parking lot.
