1 Dead, at Least 5 Hurt in Clashes

Israeli air and ground forces attacked guerrilla bases in southern Lebanon, leaving one militant dead and at least five people wounded in the heaviest fighting in two weeks, Lebanese security officials said. Israel said three of its soldiers were injured and that a member of the Israeli-allied South Lebanon Army, or SLA, was slightly hurt. A Fijian soldier in the U.N. peacekeeping force suffered shrapnel wounds in the village of Mansouri when a shell fired by the SLA hit his position, said a U.N. officer who requested anonymity. Militants with Hezbollah said one of its guerrillas was killed in fighting near Tyre.
