Planning Commissioners have voted 3 to 1 to approve a request to build eight cellular phone antennas on top of a water tank owned by the South Coast Water District.
Houston-based Metricom will paint the mounting hardware to match the color of the water tank.
Single-family homes are located north and west of the site, which is west of Pacific Island Drive and south of Oceanbreeze Way. Representatives from the Monarch Point Homeowners Assn. reviewed the plans and made no objections.
The site, zoned as open space, is surrounded by steep slopes to the east and south.
The equipment, valued at about $15,000, must be removed by Metricom within 120 days if it is no longer being used for cellular phone services.
