David Mulcahey scored from seven yards with 2:26 remaining in overtime to give third-seeded Crescenta Valley High an 11-10 victory over unseeded La Serna in a Southern Section Division III quarterfinal Tuesday at Pasadena College.
The Falcons (23-4) led, 10-8, with 2:36 left in regulation, but the Lancers (17-10) tied the score on David Goetz’s goal with three seconds left.
“La Serna is a team that won’t back down,” said Coach Jan Sakonju. “They have a really good tradition in water polo.”
Jeff Little scored five goals, including three in the second quarter, for the Falcons.
Mulcahey and Steve Han each had two goals, and Mike Hoy made 18 saves.
Crescenta Valley won for the first time in four overtime games this season.
One of the overtime defeats was to Mira Costa, the division’s second-seeded team, which the Falcons play in Saturday’s semifinal at a site to be determined by a coin flip today.
