Bicyclist Killed in Santa Ana; 3 Injured on Ortega Highway

A bicyclist was killed in Santa Ana on Friday when he pedaled through a red light and was struck by a vehicle, police said.

Authorities said the man was traveling north on English Street, crossed against the light at 17th Street and was struck by an eastbound vehicle about 2:30 p.m.

An investigation was continuing late Friday, and the victim’s identity had not been determined.

In a separate incident, three people were injured in a head-on collision on the Ortega Highway that involved three cars, one of which was stolen, California Highway Patrol officials said.

A CHP dispatcher said the victims suffered “major trauma injuries” and were transported to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo. Their identities were not released, and a spokeswoman, citing hospital policy, would not release information about them Friday night.

A CHP report stated that the crash occurred at 2:53 p.m. east of the San Juan Capistrano city limits. The CHP blocked traffic at Ortega Highway and La Pata Avenue as paramedics treated the victims.

The westbound lanes reopened at 3:55 p.m. with CHP officers allowing 15 cars to proceed alternately in opposite directions. The eastbound lanes reopened at 4:41 p.m.
