USC Journalism Project to Focus on Social Justice

LOS ANGELES — The USC Journalism School is establishing a program focusing on the news coverage of social justice issues.
A $425,000 Ford Foundation grant will create the Institute for Justice and Journalism, said Loren Ghiglione, director of the Annenberg School of Journalism.
Steve Montiel, former president of the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, will direct the new program. Its goal is to help journalists do a better job of covering communities “affected by discrimination, poverty and inequity,” he said.
A spring conference will bring together leading thinkers, journalism experts, social activists and scholars to help shape the institute’s mission, Ghiglione said.
