DeVaughn Peace, a guard from Torrance Bishop Montgomery High, has committed to play at UC Irvine, Bishop Montgomery Coach Doug Butler said Thursday. Peace, who is 6 feet 3, averaged 10 points, five rebounds and six assists last season. He is the point guard on a Bishop Montgomery team that includes Errick and Derrick Craven, twin guards who have committed to USC.
“DeVaughn doesn’t get as much attention because those two are such exciting players,” Butler said. “But DeVaughn is the guy who does the dirty work for us.”
* Senior point guard Malachi Edmond participated in limited drills Thursday, but he and Anteater men’s Coach Pat Douglass stopped short of declaring Edmond fit to return to normal workouts.
Edmond has been slowed by a groin pull in an area of his leg where he has had chronic problems since he was 13.
Edmond will most likely sit out the Anteaters’ Nov. 3 exhibition opener with South Dakota at the Bren Center.
“I’m not going to make any predictions as to when I’ll be ready. I’m going to take it step by step,” Edmond said. “Right now I think I’m about 70% of what I should be.”
