Germano Maccari, 48, who served 23 years for his role in the kidnapping and slaying of former Italian Premier Aldo Moro, died over the weekend in a Rome prison of an apparent heart attack.
Maccari was one of four members of the Red Brigades terrorist group convicted in the 1978 Moro kidnapping. The kidnapping was the most notorious attack by the Red Brigades, a leftist group that bloodied Italy in the 1970s and 1980s.
At his trial, Maccari confessed to his involvement in the crime, saying he was present when a companion killed Moro. “I have lived battered by remorse,” Maccari said at the time.
Italian newspapers reported his death Monday.
