MEXICO CITY — An American tourist was fatally shot during a robbery attempt in southern Mexico City, the city attorney general’s office said Sunday.
Helen Garnes Darnell, 63, of Atlanta was approached Saturday by two people as she and her husband got into a car in San Angel, a popular tourist neighborhood known for its Saturday market of original paintings and arts and crafts.
The two bandits demanded that Darnell turn over her money and belongings, but she resisted and was shot in the neck, officials said.
The assailants fled without taking anything. Darnell’s husband, Charles Darnell, was not injured.
The U.S. Embassy said it was aware of the case and was in touch with Mexican authorities.
Police had made no arrests.
