Democratic Panel Will Examine Fla. Vote

WASHINGTON — House Democrats unveiled a task force Wednesday to look into voting problems in last year’s election, as political maneuvering held up the launch of a bipartisan effort to delve into the same issue.
House Democratic leader Richard A. Gephardt of Missouri named Rep. Maxine Waters of Los Angeles, a member of the Black Congressional Caucus, to chair the task force, an appointment that underscored the importance of the issue to black voters.
Waters has been vocal in registering complaints about the Florida controversy and objected when the state’s electoral votes were formally counted Jan. 6 in the House chamber.
“What happened in Florida and around the country must not be allowed to happen ever again,” Gephardt said.
