* Last year: Dennis Paulson won his first PGA Tour title, beating David Duval on the fourth hole of a playoff.
* Last week: South Africa’s Retief Goosen redeemed himself in the U.S. Open, beating Mark Brooks, 70-72, in a Monday playoff. On Sunday, Goosen three-putted from 12 feet on the final hole of regulation to fall into a tie with Brooks at four under. Tiger Woods tied for 12th, seven strokes behind Goosen and Brooks.
* Notes: Woods is making his third appearance in the tournament. He missed the cut as an 18-year-old amateur in 1994 and tied for 43rd in 1997. . . . Fiji’s Vijay Singh won in 1993 and 1995, and South Africa’s Ernie Els took the 1996 and 1997 titles. . . . The Greater Hartford Open is next week, followed by the Western Open.

* Last week: Australia’s Rachel Teske won the Evian Masters in France, beating Sweden’s Maria Hjorth by a stroke.
* Notes: Australia’s Karrie Webb retained her U.S. Women’s Open title three weeks ago at Pine Needles, her fourth victory in the last seven majors. . . . Sweden’s Annika Sorenstam won the Nabisco Championship in March for her third major title. She leads the tour with five victories and earnings of $1,080,167. . . .
