Residents Object to Green Boxes

Green plastic boxes have begun appearing on lawns and private easements in Rancho Cucamonga, triggering daily complaints to City Hall. But the boxes, Charter Communications says, are necessary to cover its new equipment for high-speed Internet access and digital programming.
“I think [residents] were accustomed to seeing a very low-profile box, and they had somewhat of an understanding that there wouldn’t be any significant changes with the upgrade,” Mayor Bill Alexander said.
The boxes, 14 inches high and 32 inches wide, cover equipment that must be above ground for ventilation, Charter says. But there is an alternative.
After resident Michelle Allen complained to the City Council about what she called the “huge” box, the cable company provided her with one that looks like a rock.
